The Great Wall is a network of fortifications rather than one single attraction. Sections near Beijing offer very different walking difficulty, restoration, scenery and transport.
Why it matters
UNESCO describes a defence system developed across many centuries, with walls, passes, watchtowers and fortresses that adapted to terrain and changing military needs.
How to approach the visit
Choose the section before planning the day. A restored, accessible section and a longer hiking route are not interchangeable experiences.
Before spending money
Confirm the exact section, reservation rules, transport, open trails, cable-car status and weather. Do not follow closed or unrestored routes.
