NYOO starter rank
not an official ranking
Suzhou’s classical gardens use rocks, water, planting, walls, windows and pavilions to compose changing miniature landscapes inside the city.
Why it matters
UNESCO lists nine gardens, mainly representing design from the 11th to 19th centuries, as exceptional examples of Chinese landscape-garden art.
How to approach the visit
Visit fewer gardens with more attention. Framed views, borrowed scenery and the sequence between rooms and courtyards matter more than the number of sites collected.
Before spending money
Confirm which garden names are included in your ticket plan, current reservations, restoration work and closing times. The UNESCO property is not one entrance.
